About this scholarship

This scholarship was created in 2006 by the family of Dr Diana Cavaye, a dedicated supporter and Honorary Fellow of Emmanuel College, and is awarded for academic excellence and service to others. The scholarship may be used for any scholarly purpose including fees, travel, attendance at a conference, and accommodation or research expenses.

Within one month after the termination of the scholarship, the Diana Cavaye Scholar must submit a report to the Principal on all activities undertaken during tenure of the scholarship. The report is to be deposited with the Cavaye family directors who will maintain an archive of the reports. Scholarship recipients are expected to correspond with their benefactors at least twice a year.

The scholarship was established by Dr Diana Cavaye’s family to commemorate the service of Diana Cavaye to Emmanuel College as a member of the College Council for 23 years from 1981 to 2003. Her focus was the students. She welcomed and accepted their diversity and encouraged changes which developed and matured their personal achievements. Dr Cavaye gave a lifetime of service to education and research, and Emmanuel has been fortunate to benefit from her commitment, her understanding and her intellect, as well as her vivacity and enthusiasm.

Diana Cavaye OAM (1925–2005) (nee England) graduated from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Science (1945) and First Class Postgraduate Honours in Zoology (1948). Her teaching career in the Department of Zoology at the University was cut short when she went to England with her husband in 1952 for three years. On return, she became the founding Head of Biology at the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education (now the Central Queensland University), Trustee of Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, advisor to the Australian Broadcasting Commission, President of the Forum Club as well as having four children and completing some subjects in the Bachelor of Education program.

On returning to Brisbane in 1970, Diana served as a Councillor on the National Health and Medical Research Council for eight years, the Senate of The University of Queensland for 11 years, the Human Experimentation Ethics Committee of The University of Queensland for 21 years, the Council of Grace College for 11 years, the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Ethics Committee for 19 years and the Council of Emmanuel College for 23 years. Diana was a part time tutor in Zoology for 18 years and completed subjects in Geology and Palaeontology.

Her service was recognised by the award of Doctor of Philosophy (honoris causa) The University of Queensland, the Order of Australia Medal, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, Honorary Fellow of Emmanuel College and Fellow of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research.
