Vale – Elspeth Sutherland (1969 – 2024)

Elspeth Sutherland, a beloved figure at Emmanuel College, passed away recently. Her significant contributions to the college’s cultural life have left an enduring legacy. 

Elspeth’s musical journey at Emmanuel College began in the 1980s. In response to the implementation of the Choralfest, Elspeth took the initiative to establish the Emmanuel College Choir. Under her guidance, the choir flourished, participating in numerous performances and competitions.  

Beyond her role as a choir director, Elspeth was also a passionate advocate for theatrical arts. She spearheaded the production of several musicals, including the iconic South Pacific. These productions not only showcased the talents of the students but also brought the college community together. Her meticulous attention to detail, her creative vision, and her ability to inspire others were instrumental in the success of these productions. 

Elspeth’s impact extended beyond her artistic endeavours. She was known for her warm personality, her infectious enthusiasm, and her ability to inspire others. She was a mentor to many students, encouraging them to pursue their passions and to strive for excellence. Her guidance and support were invaluable to countless students who benefited from her wisdom and experience. 

The Emmanuel College community mourns the loss of Elspeth. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of students. She will be remembered for her passion, her creativity, and her unwavering commitment to the arts.
