Emmanuel College is proud to announce that alumna Dr Jordan Cory (EMC 2011-14) has been awarded a Distinguished Young Alumni Award by The University of Queensland for her contributions to medicine, Indigenous health and gender equity.
Currently undertaking her surgical residency at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Jordan is passionate about health equity, particularly in improving access to emergency and essential surgical services across the globe. She also conducts research to improve surgical outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In 2018 she was awarded the coveted Poche Centre for Indigenous Health fellowship at the University of Melbourne and Kings College London.
“I was always drawn to medicine as a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community and as a powerful way to challenge the status quo of the inequities we still see in modern Australia and around the world,” Jordan said.
As a Kamilaroi woman with an understanding of health and its social determinants, Jordan contributes to the not-for-profit sector as a board director of Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association, working to achieve a medical workforce reflective of the diversity and needs of Australian communities, and of Children’s Ground, empowering Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory through early childhood education and community programs.
Jordan also advocates for greater gender equality in the surgical profession and the wider community. Last year she served on the executive committee of the Victorian Medical Women’s Society and represented the Medical Women’s International Association at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York.

As an undergraduate student studying at UQ and living at Emmanuel College, Jordan Cory’s commitment to community service and to helping others was exemplary. Jordan has achieved so much in the five years since she left Emmanuel College, and we’re so proud that her contributions to medicine, Indigenous health and gender equity have been recognised through this well-deserved UQ Distinguished Young Alumni Award.”
The UQ Alumni Awards recognise the achievements of alumni who have accomplished outstanding success in their fields and made exemplary contributions to their community. The annual UQ Courting the Greats ceremony will be held on Wednesday 16 October 2019 at Brisbane City Hall.
