UQ Colleges Rugby 7s – Blue Dogs maul opposition

Seven has proved to be a lucky number for Emmanuel College, with our men’s rugby 7s team taking out the UQ Colleges Rugby 7s premiership on Saturday. The Emmanuel men’s team defied expectations and caused an upset in the division, held on 15 and 16 September 2017, by defeating the heavily favoured King’s College 22-17 in the final.

Emmanuel’s women’s team battled injuries as well as their opponents, showing extreme courage to reach the plate final against The Women’s College. The Women’s College Old Girls team was the ultimate winner of the women’s division. Emmanuel College alumni, aka Old Dogs, also fielded a team, finishing the competition in 9th place after facing a tough run in the group stages.

Thanks to the Emmanuel College residents who organised the competition and to all who volunteered over the weekend to ensure it ran smoothly.

The UQ Colleges tournament was held in conjunction with a festival of rugby 7s hosted by the University of Queensland Rugby Football Club. In addition to the UQ Rugby 7s Open Men’s competition, university teams battled out the third round of the Aon Uni 7s series. Spurred on by a large home crowd , the University of Queensland beat Macquarie University 12-5 and was crowned Uni 7s tournament champions for the third time straight.
