From one Treasurer to another

Written by third year student and Wing Community Leader, Megan Burton
Every collegian will tell you that being part of a community such as ours, allows you to share unforgettable experiences and form life-long friends. I have no doubt, we will reflect on our time here at Emmanuel, and hold these memories close to our hearts. This Blue Dog community leaves such a long-lasting impression, and our loyal alumni relationships continue to reflect that.
Emmanuel alumnus, James Whitelaw (1984-1986), graduated university and joined a large international accounting firm after his studies. Later, he went on to found his own firm. James has also founded numerous social enterprises tackling affordable housing, disability housing and aged care. His active involvement within Emmanuel College extends to over a decade of service on the College Board which he completed in 2019, and providing multiple professional opportunities and contacts for Emmanuel students. He served as Students’ Club Treasurer in 1986, and later married a fellow collegian. The married couple went on to have two children together, who both attended Emmanuel. “My Emmanuel years were the best years of my life so far and my Emmanuel friendships have endured,” said James.
Alumnus Chris Morris, current College Life Senior Assistant, was the Students’ Club Treasurer in 2015, and has been involved working with James for numerous years. Most recently, an invitation was extended to our current cohort of students with a position available at Trilogy Care. Kaelan Gough, 2021 Students’ Club Treasurer, successfully filled the position. As Kaelan completes his third year of a Bachelor of International Business and Finance, this opportunity has been extremely beneficial for him to gain experience whilst studying. “Trilogy Care are flexible with my schedule and allow me to work partly from college, encouraging me as a leader, to make the most of this chapter in my life,” Kaelan said. Opportunities like this are crucial for students, as it allows them to make professional connections that can later assist them in future career endeavours. Kaelan has very much enjoyed his time with Trilogy Care, and is excited to see where this will lead him. “I enjoy working alongside past Emmanuelians,” he said. “I enjoy learning about their journeys with hopes that one day, I can offer students the same opportunities.”
Alumni connections are unique. They automatically connect students to a diverse and well-rounded community; not one of our Blue Dogs are the same. However, we all share an equal love and passion for this amazing College, and that stays with us forever.
