UQ Lifegroup is held at Emmanuel College every Tuesday night. It is a thriving and inclusive community in which Christianity is openly discussed and questions explored.
On 16 May more than 60 students were privileged and honoured to have the incredible Australian Olympic swimmer Daniel Smith come and share his story of transformation and recovery from a severe drug addiction as a result of becoming a Christian.
Being an Olympic swimmer was Daniel’s dream and, sadly, this was lost with his abuse of drugs and alcohol in his late teens. Daniel highlighted the impact that drug addiction and binge drinking can have on not only the individual, but also on the family and friends around them.
Amidst sharing his personal story of breaking his addiction, Daniel challenged Emmanuel students to think about what anchors us during the storms of life. He revealed that relying on his own strength was not enough. Daniel’s story is a powerful one of hope and inspiration — to dream big, but ultimately remain anchored in a greater source.
