Ian Macfarlane is the federal member for Groom, an electorate which covers Toowoomba, known around Australia as the Garden City, and some of Australia’s richest farming land on the Darling Downs. Ian has a deep connection with regional Australia after growing up on a farm in the Kingaroy district. Before entering federal politics, Ian farmed peanuts, sorghum and wheat and ran cattle before becoming one of the country’s most active agri-politicians.
Ian was President of the Queensland Grain Growers Association for seven years, President of the Grains Council of Australia for two years and simultaneously held executive positions on the Queensland and National Farmers Federations. Ian was a senior minister in the Howard Government, holding the portfolio of Industry, Tourism and Resources from 2001 to 2007. Ian continues his interest in Australia’s energy and resources sector, working closely with the industry from his Opposition portfolio.
Ian is married to Karen and they have two adult daughters, Kate and Laura.
