Sir Harry Gibbs Law Dinner 2018
Thursday 30 August @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm$40 – $750
Annual event: A member of the legal profession presents a speech at this dinner named in honour of distinguished Emmanuel College alumnus Sir Harry Gibbs, Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia 1981-87.
2018 guest speaker: Professor Heather Douglas, TC Beirne School of Law, The University of Queensland, and researcher in criminal justice and domestic violence in conversation with Cathy Van Extel, ABC Radio — “Domestic Violence and the Law: Achievements and Future Directions”
Every year many women turn to law as an integral part of their strategy to live lives free and safe from domestic violence. Women apply for protection orders, family court orders and orders to avoid deportation after separation from an abuser. Sometimes they become involved in child safety and criminal justice interventions because of their experience of domestic violence. While separation may seem like a solution, far from signalling an end to violence, separation often drives legal engagement that in turn provides opportunities for new forms of abuse. Drawing on interviews with women who have experienced domestic violence and engaged with the law this discussion considers some of the key legal changes of the past few years and highlights some emerging issues.
Heather Douglas is a Professor of Law, an Australian Research Council Future Fellow and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the Australian Academy of Law. She is based at The Law School, University of Queensland. Heather has published widely on domestic violence and child protection. Her recent work under her future fellowship focusses on women’s experience of legal engagement as part of their response to domestic and family violence.
In a first for this annual event, ABC Radio National is recording the conversation for future broadcast on the Big Ideas program.
