Dr Heather Smith was appointed Deputy Secretary, G20 Sherpa in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in September 2013. She was awarded a Public Service Medal in 2015 for outstanding public service as Australia’s sherpa for the 2014 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brisbane. In 2016 Heather was awarded the Colleges’ UQ Alumni Award for her outstanding contribution to The University of Queensland and Emmanuel College and her positive impact on the wider community.
Prior to this, between 2000 and 2013, Heather was responsible for economic, industry, infrastructure, environment, and strategic policy matters in the DPMC, and held senior positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Office of National Assessments, and the Australian Treasury.
Before joining the public service, Heather was an academic working on North Asia at the Australian National University, holding various positions from 1994-2000. She also worked at the Reserve Bank of Australia from 1988-1990.
Heather resided at Emmanuel College from 1984-1986 while studying for her Bachelor of Economics at The University of Queensland. She holds a Masters and a PhD in Economics from the Australian National University.
