Student Academic Programme

Emmanuel College draws upon the traditions of the finest collegiate Universities of the world such as Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard.

  • The College is committed to modelling ‘best practice' in education, not only by drawing upon the most distinguished Universities in the western world, but by making its own unique contribution.
  • Tutors are employed from among the most capable postgraduate University students (usually those working at PhD level) and others from within the wider community who bring broad experience in their field of expertise. A small number of outstanding senior college students are also employed, giving them the opportunity to enhance their own skills and abilities.
  • At a time of expanding university class sizes and decreasing opportunities for students to engage with lecturers, Emmanuel College tutors work both with individual students and small groups. As tutors are not constrained by specific course outlines they are able to explore with students the wider and deeper conceptual meanings within a particular field of study.
  • It is the aim of Universities world-wide to create independent thinkers. The growth and expansion of student skill in areas such as critical thinking and analysis is an important part of this learning. Emmanuel College tutorials are deliberately held at small numbers to facilitate such learning.
  • Students are encouraged to attend tutorials in their discipline, usually held on a Monday evening, to add value to their University study.
  • Individual support and tuition is also available for students, particularly in the area of writing for University.
  • The academic programme has four main elements:
    1. The tutorial programme
    2. Academic mentoring
    3. A programme of generic academic skills training
    4. From time to time visitors are invited to make presentations to students. These include academics and distinguished individuals from within the wider community.
